Assuming that was an actual striking, Will Smith committed Battery on national/international TV.

The event seems to me to have been either a serious over-reaction or a publicity stunt of questionable wisdom and value.

Apparently the gist of the occurrence is that Jada Smith has a measure of alopecia (balding), which she's spoken about publicly for years. Rock's reference to "GI Jane 2" had to do with the very short haircut Demi Moore had for the title role in "GI Jane".

In the video clip, one can see Will Smith initially laughing at the joke, but then acting aggressively with regard to it. Perhaps Jada had indicated she felt hurt by the remark. I can see that Rock may have intended the joke as a friendly, even sympathetic, one, intending no offense.

I'm not prepared to give kudos to Smith for this choice. He could have easily remained where he was, standing perhaps, and insisting Rock apologize to his wife. Instead, he committed battery. Not really a good look, nor a good example for younger fans who look up to him.

Or, maybe it's the start of a publicity stunt. Certainly a lot of attention has gone to Will, Jada, and Chris today. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
