After 7 hours of talks between Russia and the US, each side was able to present their case in a clear and concise manner. Surprisingly, the Russians didn't walk away but maintained a patient and diplomatic manner to make sure their positions were fully laid out. There were no major conclusions made, but there are two more meetings this week, so at least the dialog continues, and that is a good thing.
Here are the basic points made:

Russia will not tolerate or allow Ukraine or Georgia to join Nato.

Russia will not allow missiles to be placed on their borders that threaten their nation with a 5 minute flight time to Moscow.

The US and Nato made clear they will sign up Ukraine or any other nation they desire into Nato, and place troops and missiles in those countries.

So, how could two countries spend 7 hours and not make any progress on the issues? That's diplomacy. It is the art of circling around a subject and seldom making any agreement.
This is what I said to my friends, after the Geneva meeting was over:

I watched the entire news conference. The Russian minister said there was no political will on the US side to resolve the main issues that Russia needed.
The main issue listed today was not to allow Ukraine in as a NATO member. The US won't even discuss the issue. Period.
Any other items are a mute point.

This kind of long winded talk is typical of diplomats.
They use words to obfuscate, delay and cover up the real purpose of the discussions. They could have 8 hours of talks where there were no agreements made, and they would say things like: "What was done today was very productive, serious and in a business-like manner. Progress was made and we are hopeful important conclusions can be made in the future. Both sides were able to lay out their critical points and now we'll assess what has been said and talk again soon."

But when you ask specific questions on the hard points they needed addressed, the diplomat will say, "no progress was made, and the points we laid out are things we cannot compromise on, ever."

There is an old quote that was made many decades ago about diplomacy at the United Nations, this is what one official said: "On the surface there is a very small, almost imperceptible amount of progress made between the two parties. But under the surface, there is absolutely NO progress made whatsoever!"

And that my friend describes the meeting today.

The Russian-American negotiations on security in Europe ended in Geneva (Switzerland). After more than 7 hours of closed-door talks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov spoke to journalists to take stock of the meeting with the American delegation chaired by his counterpart Wendy Sherman.

The Russian representative declared that Russia had repeated to the Americans that it had “no intention of attacking Ukraine”, this hypothesis having been conveyed by the United States and in the media in recent months due to troop movements. He warned, however, that Washington should not underestimate the risk of a confrontation.

According to Sergei Ryabkov, the United States takes Russian demands “very seriously”. Notably the end of NATO enlargement towards eastern Europe. Russia was satisfied with the seriousness with which the Americans had received, during talks on Monday, Russian demands to guarantee its security in the face of NATO. Riabkov judged after the Geneva talks that the “situation was not hopeless.”

Without progress on the subject of non-expansion of NATO and non-deployment of missiles near the Russian Federation, discussions with the United States on other aspects of security guarantees risk being compromised, said Ryabkov. “We have made it clear that without progress on these three key issues (NATO enlargement, non-deployment of missiles, material development of the territories of the states which have joined the NATO) discussions on other aspects will be compromised” he declared.

However, US diplomat Wendy Sherman said Washington had warned Moscow that NATO’s “open door” policy will continue.

Russia has not responded to the US demand for de-escalation on the Ukrainian border during Monday’s talks in Geneva, the US Deputy Secretary of State said. She explained to journalists that Moscow could initiate this de-escalation by “sending back to their barracks the soldiers” amassed at the border in recent weeks.

Asked to say whether her Russian counterpart Sergei Riabkov had given pledges in this direction, she replied: “I don’t think we know the answer to that.”

US State Department also said: We issued warnings to Moscow about Ukraine during the Geneva talks, and we also stressed with Russia the need to prevent a nuclear war, and there will be no victor if it occurs.

The key question on whether there will be further talks this week, after the meetings today, remains unanswered. (end article)

As it stands now the two parties will continue to meet for discussions this week, but it is unlikely any progress will be made that would satisfy each party.
The bottom line is, the west purposely stopped honoring the agreements made by previous US presidents. And to solve the issues at hand all the west has to do is abide by the agreements they made, stop their march towards Russia and maintain the buffer state distances regarding military posture. But that is the one thing the globalists that control the US, Europe and Nato - refuse to do.

This gives Russia no choice but to defend their nation by placing missiles an equal distance to European and US borders. This means there continues to be a danger of a war breaking out since both sides are on high alert. This insanity is unnecessary and could be defused, but as things stand now, a change back to "Detente" is unlikely with the globalists fully in control. George Eaton
