A number of things have to happen before China invades Taiwan, here in no particular order.

1) Due to Taiwan's rugged features, shallow waters and lack of suitable beaches, China would need an attack ratio of at least 4 -1, ideally 5. Taiwan has some 200,000 active ground forces, so China would need to field at least 1.2 million troops.

2) Based on the previous figure the mobilisation of 1.2 million troops, troop ships (lots of them), tanks, support personnel. Well basically Taiwan would have lots of notice, no one can mobilise that much kit and personnel without satellites picking it up.

3) Taiwan can mobilise as defenders at least another 1 million personnel.

4) The CCP has not fought a war since 1979, they would be clueless, experience counts on the battlefield.

5) Taiwan could hit the demarcation sites the Chinese use, with shock and awe missile attacks, attack over before it's begun.

6) Ultimately overwhelming force would work but with losses for the Chinese numbering hundreds of thousands.

7) If the US did get involved it would easily tip the scales and China would lose badly and would have to go bash it's own head on it's 'steel wall'.
