The following warning was passed along from an employee of a large electric power utility in Tennessee. The issues he warns us about are already evident in MOST other places in the nation. Things do not bode well on this front.
I'm a Twenty four year electric distribution utility employee (to whom you pay your "light bill") and some of our materials and supplies are getting stupidly long delivery times.
Big substation transformers from one of our vendors are 80 weeks out. A year and a half plus two weeks.
All American vendors are creeping out to 40+ weeks.
Pole-mount transformers are 20-24 weeks. These are the ones that you see in front of your house. They get damaged by lightning and if a pole is broken by the wind they'll get body-slammed into the ground and ruined.
A neighboring utility to mine has stated that if a major derecho event or tornado hits, there'll be months-long outages because they don't have in stock and can't get the material to restore service.
Even commodities such as bolts and insulators and AAC and ACSR conductors are getting scarce. We're told raw materials are in short supply.
Have yourself a generator, and have it where you can safely run your house as you see fit. My goal is to keep a couple little freezers going for as many weeks as possible..."

My comment:
I have lived off the grid at times and used generators. It is costly and a hassle to keep a generator going all the time. It is better IMO to find alternatives to the constant use of a generator. Consider a propane powered refrigerator as a back up. Can your food and dry food for long term storage, rather than depending on freezers and refrigeration. Have a cellar. Use batteries for a radio and TV with an inverter system from DC to AC. Consider a solar powered battery system. Use gas or battery lanterns and candles.
It has always been known that the big weakness in the electric grid is the lack of replacement transformers. This is why experts have said if there was an EMP event it would knock out most of the transformers nationwide. The transformer companies would take a year to build enough to get the system back operating. And, once the electrical system stays down that long, it would result in food shortages, hunger riots and a host of shortages like clean water - and the end result would be 90% of the population dying off. Obviously it is worse now than it was before, so the shortages are already acute and at a dangerously low level.
If electric companies are already having problems getting them, that means the national infrastructure is suffering for a variety of reasons, none of them good. The system is starting to collapse for lack of funds and critical employees that have died from getting the shot. This is another example of the lack of trained employees that unskilled workers can't replace in time to keep the system going. This also means that generators will be next to be difficult to find.
This issue was dealt with in the book "Atlas Shrugged". Replacement parts for cars, trucks, factories and then trains, were all in short supply because of manufacturing slowdowns and essential materials not being available.
This is a sign of a failed system, like what happened in the Soviet Union. Keep in mind that this socialist government is NOT addressing this important issue, and the corrupt politicians are allowing the system to collapse on its own without making moves to defend the nation's critical defenses. The nation's infrastructure is part of the national defense system, and without making the necessary moves to defend the nation, it is easier for an enemy to conquer this nation. GE
