I’m gonna let you post this if you want... as a response to this question.

First, we need to understand what ‘nuke plant’ is in blunt terms. These are fission reactors, that use radioactive material to generate heat, which is then converted by water and a steam turbine, into electricity.

The radioactive material has a half-life (measured in years) that reactor operators have to keep an eye on. When the half-life of most of the material expires, new radioactive material has to be exchanged for the old material.

Every few years (3-5 years depending on the reactors’ design).

The old material is then stored in storage units designed for this purpose, while the material continues to half-life and half-life ad infinitum. Eventually, this material will stop being radioactively dangerous, after 50-150 years.

If no-one services the reactors, they will simply go literally cold, and the plant will become a dead building doing nothing.
