I first learned about the explosion in Stinson Beach this morning when I received a text message on my phone from nixle.com, which provides alerts from local agencies. Prior to receiving that text message, Nixle had alerted me that a teenage girl in southern Marin County had gone missing this morning and asked if anyone had any clues about her whereabouts. Yesterday an arsonist who was later apprehended set fire to dry brush in Corte Madera. Fortunately, the blaze was extinguished quickly and nobody was hurt.

What is especially troubling to me about the Stinson Beach incident is that it occurred in a commercial district on Shoreline Highway close to where two footraces normally take place during the month of June: the Dipsea that is followed 6 days later by the Double Dipsea. Because of the Covid-19 quarantines, both of those events were canceled ahead of time by the race organizers. Having volunteered as a ham radio operator for the Dipsea race that was held in 2018, I am familiar with the location.

Highway 1 closed after explosion, fire shakes downtown Stinson Beach

Authorities have shut down Highway 1 in West Marin after an explosion set off a multi-building fire in downtown Stinson Beach leaving behind a field of debris.

The explosion was reported at 8:42 a.m. Tuesday at the Oceanic Realty office at 3470 Shoreline Highway, said Laine Hendricks, spokeswoman for the Marin County Fire Department.

The explosion is believed to have originated in the upstairs portion of the building. The cause is under investigation.
