BATTLE FOR WORLD | March 5, 2020 : An information documentary shown on RT, Virologist Dmitriy L'vov talks about the dangers of current coronavirus outbreak. An except of important points made by the Russian virologist:
Host: (06:29 video time mark) ...Here's what I mean. Maybe there are so many deaths because the coronavirus has not yet adapted to humans?
L'vov: It's like a blind date when two strangers meet. Over time, if it remains among humans...but I doubt that. It will be kicked out by other respiratory viruses. The competition is too high.
Host: So it will not be [able to] have time to adapt?
L'vov: It will go back to bats; it might come back in some 10 or 20 years somewhere - it could be in China or even Russia... And these are the very same bats that were the source of the virus during the 20-year inter-epidemic period... We have bats in Russia, too. There are seasonal migrations in the autumn among bats, like with birds, and quite possibly Russian bats fly to China for the winter where their populations get mixed and then they fly back to the south of Russia.
Host: But still, someone had to have eaten a bat like that, or...?
L'vov: The virus easily travels from bat to bat...
Host: That's clear.
L'vov: But to infect [the] human population, it has to be transferred under special circumstances when the concentration of the virus is quite high... This [is] how it could have happened: we could stipulate that the bats' feces and discharges in sufficient amounts [, and] could have contaminated some food products on that market...
Host: In Wuhan?
L'vov: Yes, in Wuhan. For instance, if some seafood products were contaminated and people were to consume them raw in some dishes, that is one way how they could have picked up the virus.
There is another scientifically proven possibility. There are animals that ... prey on bats. These are civets, which are related to the mongooses that we all know of thanks to Kipling's story about the brave mongoose, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. These are also as badgers and snakes. These animals can get easily infected due to such diet and people in China are known to hunt these animals for food. If under-cooked, such meat could become the source of viral infection for humans. Still, I believe that to actually infect a human, the amount of ingested virus must be quite high. If that's how it happened, we thus got the patient zero and then the virus went on spreading from human to human and we know how that happens. This virus is seriously less contagious that the flu virus, which is why the process has been quite slow. ...
Host: (01:57 video time mark) ...Could you explain the mechanics? The coronavirus exists only in bats, not humans, right?
L'vov: This is not quite so. There are dozens or even hundreds of coronaviruses out there. There are several genera of coronaviruses. Some target birds, for example, there is a coronavirus that affects nightingales. It's called the bulbul coronavirus. ...There are coronaviruses that affect whales, some target fish, but almost all of them use bats as reservoirs.
There are two genera: the first is alpha-coronaviruses that include the one that affects humans; it's the seasonal coronavirus that has been with humans for hundreds of years. It's part of the human respiratory-virus repertoire.
This year, around 7% of respiratory-virus diseases were caused by human coronaviruses.
Host: Have they adapted to humans?
L'vov: They have adapted to humans, and are no longer the cause of lethal cases. They can cause some issues, particularly with children. ...
