For the second time this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising Americans not to eat any romaine lettuce grown in the Salinas, Calif., region due to an E. coli outbreak.

A statement on the CDC's website reads: "CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to romaine lettuce harvested from the Salinas, California growing region."

On Thursday, Missa Bay recalled salad products due to possible E. coli contamination.

According to CDC data, there have been 40 reported cases of E. coli across 16 different states. Twenty-eight of those cases have been hospitalized and five of them have developed a kind of kidney failure, but there have yet to be any reported deaths.

In addition to not buying any additional romaine lettuce, the CDC says "wash and sanitize drawers or shelves in refrigerators where romaine lettuce was stored."

The CDC's most recent recall of romaine lettuce came in January and then in June of last year.

FOOD SAFETY ALERT
IF YOU HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED ROMAINE LETTUCE, PLEASE READ THIS FOOD SAFETY ALERT.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Food Safety Alert advising U.S. consumers not to eat romaine lettuce harvested from the Salinas, California growing region due to a potential E. coli outbreak.

An official recall has not been announced. Although the CDC has not declared a formal recall, we are sharing the relevant information with all customers potentially impacted.

Out of an abundance of caution, Raley's has removed any impacted romaine lettuce from our produce and food service departments. All romaine products on the shelves or in our food service departments have not been affected by the CDC Food Safety Alert.

For transparency, romaine lettuce products are labeled with the harvest location. If you recently purchased romaine lettuce (in any form, including heads of romaine, hearts of romaine and bags of pre-cut lettuce and salad mixes that contain romaine) with "Salinas" on the label or unlabeled bulk romaine lettuce from Raley's, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Food Source, Market 5-ONE-5 and Sak'n Save, please:
1. Visit your local Raley's, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Food Source, Market 5-ONE-5 or Sak'n Save for a full refund.
2. Throw the product away.
3. Be sure to clean any drawers or shelves where the lettuce was stored.
