As a child, you might assume that parents are more wise. They may be, in some areas. Maybe not in others. Depends on the genetics involved. Step parents usually are not on the same page, so to speak.

Parental respect is not to be handed out like a participation trophy. There is a basic parental respect, which is slightly higher than what is given to all human beings. There is a higher respect that is earned by exampled behavior or performance, which the child emulates when applicable to personal experiences of a similar kind. But just because another human being is your parent does not mean they are perfect. Therefore, they are subject to criticism like any other human being. The maturity, or present condition, can be determined by the reaction you receive when criticizing them. If you are a teenager, expect a lot of back and forth criticism of your own awareness and behavior. Sometimes we are the student, and sometimes we are the teacher.

They can make demands/commands, but their ability to enforce that as you grow up lessens. For example, later on, when they try to pull the "I'm your mother!" routine with you as an adult, you don't have to put up with that immaturity. By then you'll probably be living on your own, and you'll have some distance between you and them. When they try the same routine, you can express your dissatisfaction with their behavior, and remind them that you are not going to subject yourself to that behavior. You can forgive, but not forget. Because that would result in suffering it all over again. Even adults have to grow up, sometime.

There is nothing wrong with forgiving someone, as long as you don't allow their behavior to repeat, with you. Don't put yourself in a situation where the behavior can continue.

Use the anger to fuel analysis, criticism, and articulation. You seek to find the correct expression, in order to educate. Recall, that you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. So you do your half, and the parent has to do the other half. If that fails, prepare to distance yourself physically. Break off communications. There is no point in communicating with someone that isn't listening, or doesn't care. You are wasting your breath. Spend your time, attention, and effort on improving yourself.
