The recent resurgence of vinyl record sales knows no bounds. After outselling CD’s this year for the first time since 1986, rare vinyl is steadying creeping up to ascertainable valuations.

According to the latest report from the Recording Industry Association of America, vinyl records earned $224.1 million (on 8.6 million units) in the first half of 2019 and the figure continues to rise.

After Far Out Magazine worked with Discogs to discover some of their biggest vinyl sales in history, Noble Oak has compiled a list which evaluates 50 of the most valuable records on the globe. When asked to detail what makes a vinyl record particularly valuable, Ian Shirley, the editor of Record Collector magazine’s Rare Record Price Guide, said that “scarcity, condition and the desire of someone to own it” play a major factor.

With pioneering works of music combated with controversial cover art, Shirley also admitted that “psychedelic singles from the ‘60s that no one was interested in at the time” are becoming etched in mystery and longevity as their valuations soars.

Perhaps unspurprisingly, bands like The Beatles feature heavily in the top 50 and, more specifically, take up three stops in the top 10. Mentions for the likes of The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Madonna, Nirvana, The Rollings Stones and more all appear.
