We are here, and we didn’t do it.

Like every mammal, we showed up.

Unlike every other mammal, we want to know what happened, what’s happening, what’s going to happen. Squirrels don’t sit, have coffee and discuss where they came from, why they are here, where are they going. They just do life until life does them.

Unlike all other mammals, we want an explanation. We want answers. We want to know, and when we don’t get answers, we make them up, or believe someone else’s answer or explanation.

We know we will die. So the biggest, baddest most important question a human asks is, “Does my identity continue after I die? That question assumes a lot.

It assumes that a human is more than just a body (an assumption without proof).

And...what really constitutes an identity? A number, a name, looks, appearance, speech, odor, mannerisms, personality, emotions, intelligence, knowledge, memories, aura, energy, vibration, a body?

And...if something (soul, spirit, essence) continues, do you really always want to be the same identity, the same body? Maybe you want to be shorter, thinner, taller, more stout, petite, a giant, be not bald, or tout a shorter nose and longer fingers and smaller feet. Maybe you’d want to try a different body, male, female or be a tweetee bird. And all that assumes that something continues after death of bodies. Squirrels just don’t worry about it. Don’t give it a thought. They’re too busy gathering nuts. Have no time to think thoughts that drive them nuts.

Thinking about life isn’t quite the same as doing life, though...thinking is doing, just like sleeping and daydreaming is doing, it’s just that in the doing, nothing gets done. Maybe someone else will empty the garbage.

So...you don’t know where you came from. Maybe that’s the answer. You don’t know where you came from because until you got here you didn’t exist. And since you don’t know where you’re going, maybe that’s the answer. You don’t go anywhere. So...you came from nowhere and you don’t go anywhere.

Well...you are here, so maybe paying attention to here and enjoying here and now is the only value there is to life. Maybe being a squirrel isn’t so bad, at least they appear to have less mental and emotional problems with life, and they drink less and do less drugs, and their wars are smaller. Yes...maybe gathering nuts is preferable to being nuts.

How ‘bout this: Since were here, try to enjoy it, and if there is a there, well...perhaps you’ll enjoy it (but if you are not enjoying here and now, it’s quite likely you won’t enjoy there later) and if there is no there, at least you won’t screw it up with your mental and emotional bullshit bad attitude, and of course, if there is no there, you’ll never know it, and THAT, might be the biggest blessing EVER. nem
