Sirens, and the blaring of a police cruiser's loudspeakers, shattered the evening calm. "Evacuation now! Evacuation now!" she recalled hearing. "I got outside and I looked at my kids, and they were screaming and crying. And then everybody was running."
A 50-metre section of a natural dike, holding back the Lake of Two Mountains, had breached in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, an off-island suburb northwest of Montreal.

Officials estimate the Ottawa River will rise nearly a metre over the next few days, well above its peak in a 2017 flood, that was thought to have been a once-a-century event.
A close eye is also being kept on a hydroelectric dam, on a tributary of the Ottawa River between Ottawa and Montreal, that's at risk of failing. Water at the Chute-Bell dam, has reached levels expected once every 1,000 years, but Hydro-Quebec says it's confident the structure is solid.

Environment Canada forecast significant rainfall - 30 to 60 millimetres in addition to run-off from melting snow - but lifted the rainfall warning just before noon on Saturday.

.........the dike that broke was built in 1976. Constructed partly of concrete, and partly of earth covered in an impermeable membrane, the dike stretches about 3.4 kilometres along the lakeshore, from Pointe-Calumet to Deux-Montagnes. At about 6 p.m. Saturday, a breach about 50 to 75 feet wide opened up, just south of 27th Ave. The town had been planning to have the dike raised and fortified for the past two years, and was awaiting a certificate from Quebec’s environment department to begin work.
