We are asked frequently if Earthing helps individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia. Here’s what we know: ● Earthing reduces inflammation. Chronic inflammation plays an important role in the onset and progression of AD. ● Earthing has a calming effect on the nervous system. Agitation and anxiety are common symptoms of AD. ● Earthing improves blood flow. Each of these Earthing effects potentially can make some difference in the overall health of individuals with dementia. However, we have no research and little feedback. Caregivers are overwhelmed, unlikely to think about grounding. One of our colleagues recalls vividly the case of an elderly woman, the mother of a friend, who had advanced AD. He grounded her in her bed and visited several times. There was a rapid calming effect, a significant benefit. The grounding also reduced her urinary frequency. We know that grounding can help heal pressure sores (bedsores), and perhaps minimize them developing in the first place. Doctors were surprised, as an example, in the case of an 88-year-old man with advanced AD, immobile and bedridden for about a year, who did not develop bedsores. The son told us in 2009, as we reported in the first edition of the Earthing book, that he had grounded his father in bed for the last six months. The doctors were also puzzled that his father’s blood pressure had normalized during this time, after years of requiring hypertension medication. The doctors were amazed that this could happen with someone who had no mobility, the son told us. They stopped the medication. Over the years we have received many testimonials about better blood pressure. A 2018 study reported that grounding improved the blood pressure of hypertensive patients. Can grounding, by potentially improving the quality of life of Alzheimer’s patients, also extend their lives? We don’t know.
