MADRID was plunged into chaos on Thursday as riots broke out following the death of an immigrant street vendor who reportedly suffered a heart attack while being chased by Spanish police.

The migrant protestors took to the streets of Madrid between 9pm and 1:30am (CET) and caused large-scale destruction in the city – damaging bus shelters, patrol cars and shops.

Shock footage from Lavapies neighbourhood of Madrid shows the region lit up in flames as protestors rebelled at police.

Firefighters were brought in to put out flames throughout the neighbourhood after furious migrant protesters torched bins, smashed windows, rioted and reaped havoc on the city.

Spanish police responded to the riots with charges and rubber bullets according to El Pais.

The protests began following the death of 35-year-old street hawker Mame Mbaye who died on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Witnesses claim the Senegalese street vendor died after being pursued by police on motorbikes but City sources told El Pais there was no police chase. He simply ran when he saw police.
