The take-away I got (spoon-feeding truth to the unawakened) prompted recall of a story my grandmother told me.

A young man who had recently moved away from his family called regularly on the weekend to touch base. One weekend his brother took his call and the young man inquired about the family. After some small talk he inquired about his beloved pet cat he had been forced to leave behind with them. His brother thoughtlessly blurted out, "Oh, he died." The man was stunned to speechlessness and hung up the phone.

Weeks passed without contact. Then, one weekend, the phone rang and his brother again answered.

"How could you have been so blunt?" the man asked. "I loved that little cat."

His brother replied, "What should I have said?".

The man offered,"You might have told me he was stuck on the roof and we can't get him down". "Then, on my next call you might have told me, We got him down but he fell and was injured so we took him to the vet". "In the next call you could have told me he took a turn for the worse but the vet was doing all he could for him." "Finally you could have told me what a brave fight he put up, but it just wasn't enough for him to pull through. Do you understand now?"

His brother said, "I'm sorry, I never thought of it affecting you so badly."

The man replied, "It's all right. I've had time to process it all now and I'm O.K."

After a bit of a pause, the man asked his brother,"How's Mom?"
His brother replied, "She's up on the roof and we can't get her down."
