Jews vs JINOs: ‘We’d rather die than enlist’ - Ultra-Orthodox Jews clash with police over military draft
The latest violent encounter between the members of Ultra-Orthodox community and law enforcement happened in the center of Bnei Brak city, several kilometers east of Tel Aviv, on Monday evening, Israeli media reported. Demonstrators blocked the city’s main road and a nearby highway, leading to scuffles with police.
“We'd rather die and not enlist, we'll happily go to jail,” the demonstrators were heard shouting. The banners held by young ultra-Orthodox said: “Stop the oppression of the religious minority in Israel.” The rally followed a similar protest on Thursday when the demonstrators gathered against the arrest of a young man, a member of the radical Jerusalem Faction.
The man refused to sign a letter requesting a deferral of service. The organizers of the Monday rally said that “the determination of the Haredi public to fight the enlistment decree will not be deterred,” as cited by AFP. They also vowed to “fight in every way the edict that has felled thousands in the spiritual ruin of the IDF [the Israel Defense Forces].”

The protesters criticized ultra-Orthodox leaders in the Knesset, the legislative branch of the Israeli government, which on Sunday reached a compromise with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the controversial conscription bill on military exemption. According to the proposal, ultra-Orthodox Israelis will be largely exempt from enlisting in the IDF. However, young men will have to report to enlistment offices in order to sign a deferral of service, a move which Jerusalem faction leaders still defied.
The organizers of the protest vowed to continue “to fearlessly defend the walls of true Judaism.” Haredi is a collective notion for groups of ultra-Orthodox Jews who consider themselves most religiously authentic and reject modern secular culture. In the meantime, police said that they allowed the protest, but have “zero tolerance to those who seek to disrupt public order and may harm the peace of the general public.”
In Israel, ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews have traditionally been exempt from military service. They insist that they have always served the society through prayer and study and helped to protect Jewish culture. However in September 2017, Israel’s Supreme Court annulled the law which exempted ultra-Orthodox Jews from being conscripted into the army. The legislation drew furious responses from the community, including mass protests and rallies in front of the houses of IDF senior officials. Israel has long had a compulsory draft, with men serving in the military for nearly three years and women for two years.

Innocent woman knocked down by Israeli ‘skunk cannon’ targeting ultra-Orthodox protesters (VIDEO) — RT World News
An innocent passerby trying to cross the street in Jerusalem on Sunday has been hit in the back of her head and sent flying several meters away by an Israeli police skunk-water cannon, deployed against ultra-Orthodox Jews protesting army conscription.
A crowd of protesters staged yet another sit-in, obstructing traffic at the corner of Jaffa Road and Nordau Street in the center of Jerusalem in protest against the compulsory military draft of ultra-Orthodox Jews. To disperse the gathering, Israeli police resorted to the so-called “skunk” cannons loaded with stinking fluids. Not without some collateral damage, though.
A woman who attempted to quickly cross the street between the police and protester lines was hit directly in the back of her head, according to a video by RT’s Ruptly. The sudden impact sent her flying several meters away and then sliding along the pedestrian crossing.
Further footage showed Jewish protesters being repeatedly struck by water torrents, before police officers move in to drag them away from. According to authorities at least 35 demonstrators were arrested on Sunday for “disrupting public order, blocking traffic, attacking civilians and police officers.”
