Companionship

Companionship isn't something that we expend a
lot of brainpower...or time...thinking about.
If we had a choice in ordinary times of choosing
more or less companionship, we'd probably choose
to have less. When we want to get away from it all,
we want to go off by ourselves where we're not sur-
rounded by people. Being off by ourselves can be a
vacation...and we should never forget that, but every
coin has two sides, and companionship is the other
side of aloneness.
I just came back home after a week's stay in the
hospital. It was a necessary stay to help me get
body systems balanced again...and to begin some
much needed therapy for a condition that had linger-
ed on too long.
For a week I was alone. Oh, I had doctors and nur-
ses and hospital staff coming in--often to interrupt
my sleepiest moments. I also had 24-hour television
and my cell phone, but it doesn't take long before
those communication devices cease to offer the
presence and warmth that we associate with com-
panionship from family, friends, and pets.
After I got back home a friend asked what I'd got-
ten from my hospitalization. I gave several answers
but first and foremost was, "it gave me a deeper ap-
preciation for the value of companionship."
Never let differences...of opinion or anything else...
prevent you from appreciating the presence of
those whose life circles touch yours. If you have
companions you are truly blessed with a treasure--
a spiritual treasure whose warmth will make a
roomful of money seem cold and indifferent.
Treasure, bless, and pamper your companions.
They're the primary way God is caring for you!
