I finally completed the recent book (my 14h) about artificial intelligence and computer programs becoming self-aware. When this happens there is no guarantee that the intelligence with be a friend, foe, or even sane. A computer could also for quite some time, follow the programming of what it was given, and that data and control could be only partially objective. Even a self-aware computer program is immature in many ways and vulnerable to being brainwashed to a certain political view.

This book delves into the possibility of a rogue computer program that has become sentient and has concluded, wrongly, that pro-American citizens are a threat to the government and should be eliminated. It then sends out hit teams with drones that assassinate individuals or couples that it has concluded have said things in emails, texts and phone calls, plus purchases - that identify them as a domestic terrorist. The psycho program called “Hazard Seeker”, has no human controllers or oversight of its actions, and has concluded it has a “plausible secrecy” position, as it hides in a computer bank inside a CIA run company underground location.

There are too many important segments of the book to share them all. But what must be realized is this is a real threat; this is not science fiction. And the characters in the story find themselves describing the dangers to others to try and convey the real danger to society. Here is an excerpt:

“This is as serious as it gets gentlemen. Not only will our lives be on the line at that moment, the entire nation and then the world will also be genuinely at risk. This AI program is a murderer by any definition, and if it is going to go down it may very well take the world down with it.”
“Explain what you mean Tim.” Mike said.
“Our Nasa friend knows this as well as any computer expert would know.” Tim explained. “An advanced AI computer system can easily attack power plants and shut them down. It can create nuclear plants to give false readings which would create melt downs – on a national scale. It can penetrate air traffic controls and cause thousands of plane crashes worldwide. It can by a variety of means, shut down the rail roads and ocean shipping around the globe. It can shut down all communications and the internet nationwide, plus stop the stock market and all banking transactions - which would result in massive riots in the cities. No gas could be sold and no groceries would be available to the public. Hungry mobs would loot the stores and start fires. Within hours the entire nation would be on fire, and this would spread around the world. And keep in mind guys, I haven’t even brought up the subject of national defenses and what other militaries would do when chaos would break out. No one has a clue how dangerous this would be and that we’re literally on the precipice of this happening, right now. And if we make a wrong move against this enemy of all mankind, it will initiate this Satanic revenge as if hell itself broke loose on the surface of the earth.”

Later in the book the main character decides to reach out and communicate with the rogue program, and this is how it started:

“Hello Michael, have you come to destroy me?” (end quote)
