Merry Christmas to all. I hope that this holiday season brings you much joy, renewal and, even, transcendence.

As I went on my walk this morning I stopped at my favorite grove of pine trees. There are two of them, side by side. They form a gateway with a bench in front. I looked at the pine cones hanging from the trees and thought about how this tree came to be included in Christ Mass celebrations. Not the palm or date tree, which are indigenous to Jesus’s homeland.

Songs of Yule and Noël have been sung to, and around, these types of trees for centuries. Of course, the pine tree had nothing to do with the birth of Christ, but it did play a role in the Christ Mass celebration.

According to scholars, the Mass of Christ, otherwise known as Communion or Eucharist, was performed by the first Christians with amanita muscaria mushrooms. These sacred mushrooms grow on the ground under pine trees. The mushroom is the original ‘gift’ under the tree in woodlands areas. For over 4,000 years it was the ingredient in a sacred and hallucinogenic ritual drink called 'soma' in India and Iran; while the Siberian shamans would give it out as a gift in late December. Shamans ate magic mushrooms on the solstice, and the festival time that followed, seeking the gift of knowledge the sacred fungi would bring. With the travel of Druids this tradition spread to Great Britain, then to the Germanic and Nordic countries.

This is why the conifer is the Christmas tree of choice and why the pine cone is symbolic of the power of redemption. It isn’t the pine cone that is important, it is that it represents tree under which the mushroom grew.

This fact, concealed in Christian art, but often seen as decorations hanging from Christmas trees, reminds us to look within for the light to emerge.

As time went by the pine cone became associated with the pineal gland, the "Seat of the Soul,” and its secret powers, including the ability to manufacture sacred secretions, including DMT, a psychedelic so powerful that it was dubbed the “spirit molecule” for its spiritual awakening–type trips.
