CGI's SkyHoop: For Vietnam Vets this Veterans Day: "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" by The Animals
Saturday, November 11th is Veterans Day, but since the banksters and the government need another day off, Veterans Day is being observed on Friday, November 10th, this year.
The Animals' 1965 hit "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" was very popular among American Forces in Vietnam, mostly because of its chorus. According to a 2006 survey, "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" could be considered the Vietnam anthem from among the veterans of the war surveyed.
I was an Army Signal Corps photographer in Vietnam (1971-1972) and unless out in the field taking pictures, was usually in the darkroom at 5 PM when the AFVN (American Forces Vietnam Network) radio DJ payed in on signing off every day. The DJ would always introduce it by saying "And now from the Delta to the DMZ..." (the Makong River Delta to the Demilitarized Zone, in other words the expanse of South Vietnam).
This is the US single version of the song played with scenes from the 1987 movie "Hamburger Hill," about the May 1969 battle that took place on Hill 937 involving the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, taking a heavily fortified ridge held by NVA, (North Vietnamese Army). The battle scene, not shown in this clip, was gruesome.
The lead singer is, of course, Eric Burdon of the British rock group, The Animals. The bass line really carries it.
