OKLAHOMA CITY — A new law is now in effect, closing a loophole, keeping people not living in the U.S. from buying property in Oklahoma.

Senate Bill 212 (SB212) is a revision of a current bill that sparked concerns among people living in the state, already owning property, but aren’t U.S. citizens.

“Once medical marijuana became legal in the state of Oklahoma, people who weren’t U.S. citizens and not planning to move to Oklahoma, people were getting LLC’s and buying property that way,” said William Gomez, a mortgage advisor.

SB212 stops that, but left out the exception in the previous bill.

“The exception said you were able to, if you were bona fide resident and planning to live on the property,” said Gomez.

That excerpt had non-citizens worried about their future of home and property ownership.

However, two weeks before becoming law, the amendment was made clearing the air for non-U.S. citizens living in the state.

“Now that that affidavit is corrected, so if you're planning on purchasing a property take a look, reach out to your lender, or local real estate, to see what you're chances are on purchasing property because it may be more possible than you think,” Gomez said.
