MILITARY OFFICER SHOOTS AT VEHICLE THAT ILLEGALLY ENTERED BASE

(USNewsBreak.com) – Military bases are some of the most protected establishments on US soil. They house the service members responsible for national safety. However, from time to time, breach attempts require guards to jump into action. A recent incident in California resulted in a military officer firing upon a driver who tried to break into a base there.

According to a Military.com report, a vehicle that unlawfully entered the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center forced a military police officer to shoot just after 8 p.m. on Friday, September 22. It didn’t take long for officials to subdue the driver — revealed to be a civilian — and send him to a naval hospital where they underwent evaluation. Authorities didn’t report any injuries associated with the incident.

Capt. Johnathon Huizar, a spokesperson for the base, said the incident didn’t result in an active shooter alert, and authorities didn’t classify the incident as terrorism. However, he said, “There’s always a review after actions,” and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is looking into the events. The civilian was unarmed, and just one Marine military police officer shot at the vehicle.

A similar incident also happened earlier this year in California. On Friday, March 17, military police placed Naval Base Coronado on lockdown when a vehicle ran through the front gate of Naval Air Station North Island without stopping. Guards also shot at that car, but nobody sustained injuries. Police eventually arrested a San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy for the incident and accused him of driving under the influence.

Then, in January, when a driver tried to enter the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, the car burst into flames after contacting denial barriers. Multiple people were riding in the vehicle at the time, and first responders took them to Palomar Hospital.

Several people have also died while trying to ram security barriers at the front of bases.
