Among the planets, the Moon (with the Ascendant) is the critical planet to look at your birth chart; even more crucial than the Sun (at least in traditional astrology). What makes the Moon important is its natural rulership over the physical body. In the Vedic tradition, if there is no definite birth time, the Moon sign is the native’s alternate Ascendant. Along with Mercury, the Moon plays an important role in nativities as it is the significator of the native’s mind. While Mercury rules the rational part of the mind and speech, the Moon’s domain is that of the emotions and the subconscious response of the native. She is the natural significator of the mother for nocturnal nativities and co-rules the women or feminine figures in the native’s life (with Venus as the other planet). Her essential temperament is cold and wet but varies as it waxes and wanes. The Moon co-signifies the person asking and the matters the person is asking about and its outcomes in horary and electional astrology. In mundane astrology, she signifies the concerns and the well-being of the people.

In this section, we will interpret the Moon in the Houses. In traditional astrology, the Moon’s house placement is critical for those with Cancer and Taurus Ascendant. It also matters if it is the hyleg of the person’s nativity. For those born at night, the Moon is the natural significator of the mother. The placement of the Moon by house in modern astrology colors the natives’ emotional needs and response.

1. The Moon in the Ascendant or the First House: People may feel at ease as these natives are likely to have a pleasing or accommodating personalities. Natives may possess excellent intuition and an innate understanding of human behavior. Since the Moon rules the mind, these natives are naturally intelligent and eloquent. If the Moon is in fortunate condition (essentially and accidentally), natives may have excellent memories. The Moon rules the emotions, so feelings and their passion play a crucial factor when natives decide. If the Moon suffers from affliction, it may manifest as restlessness or with the lack of persistence. There is also a predisposition to extreme mood swings and procrastination. As moderately cold and wet, the Moon in the Ascendant could portend roundness or plumpness. Water-retention and weight gain could be problems. The Moon in the Ascendant is favorable for Cancer and Taurus Rising. For Cancer and Taurus Ascendant, the Moon in the first house augurs a robust constitution and could bring worldly honors to the natives; however, since the Moon likes to be comfortable, people may accuse natives of resting on their laurels or not trying very hard. It is a challenging placement for those with Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius Ascendant. For those with Leo Ascendant, the Moon ruling the twelfth house (of self-undoing, sorrows, and losses) could bring health issues and challenging life situations. The challenge comes from the Moon being a naturally cold and wet planet, in a barren, hot, and dry sign; it is like dousing a fire with water. Perhaps the extreme heat and dryness of the sign fizzles out the moisture of the Moon. Personality-wise, natives with this placement are temperamental. Natives could be anxious and may suffer from losses because of hidden enemies or because of their lack of emotional control; however, there is a need to look at the aspects and reception between the Sun and the Moon. Albeit ruling the fairly benefic Ninth House for those with Scorpio Rising, the Moon is in the sign of her fall. Unless there is a mutual reception between the Moon and Mars, the placement could manifest as problems on foreign journeys and altercations with the law. Since the ninth house also rules spirituality, the natives may possess extreme intuitive abilities and interest in the occult. The Moon rules the eighth house for Sagittarius Ascendant. If the Moon afflicts Jupiter or Jupiter afflicts the Moon, health issues may arise and may bring financial loss because of debts, loans, and squandering of inheritance because of risk management issues. It is noteworthy that Jupiter rules the Moon, and she has an essential decan dignity here, so there could still be gains from inheritance and wills; however, there is a need to evaluate the relationship between the Moon and Jupiter. For Capricorn Rising, the Moon rules the seventh house. If there is a challenging aspect between the Moon and Saturn, natives could experience troubles in partnerships and marriage. The Moon rules the sixth house for those with Aquarius Ascendant. With Saturn ruling the Moon, the natives could also suffer frequently from feelings of inadequacy and isolation. Since the Moon rules the sixth house, acute illnesses and/or experience troubles with colleagues should the Moon afflict Saturn or Saturn afflicting the Moon.
