EKTAKTO: Group of NATO countries want to send military forces "here and now" to Ukraine

They doubt the effectiveness of the American strategy - Anders Fogh Rasmussen's warning a few hours after G. Stoltenberg's statement

A group of NATO countries, led by Poland, Britain, Finland and the Baltic states, may be willing to send troops to Ukraine if member states, including the US, do not provide tangible security guarantees to Kiev at the summit of the alliance in Vilnius, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen, who serves as an official adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has been touring Europe and the US ahead of the crucial July 11 summit.

He also warned that even if a group of states provides Ukraine with security guarantees, others will not allow the issue of Ukraine's future NATO membership to remain off the agenda in Vilnius.

He made his remarks as current NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the issue of security guarantees would be on the Vilnius agenda, but added that NATO - under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - provides full security guarantees only to full members.

Why; Why do they think that the American strategy can lead to the defeat of Ukraine and then these countries will be exposed to the Russian "hunger for revenge", since the help they have given to Ukraine has led to the death of thousands of Russians.

And they want to send military forces to prevent - as they believe - the Ukrainian defeat, but also to defeat the Russians on the Ukrainian field and not to have to fight inside their countries, as they believe will surely happen if they do not send an army inside now in Ukraine.

They probably think that the Ukrainian counterattack will fail...

Rasmussen said: “If NATO cannot agree on a clear way forward for Ukraine, there is a clear possibility that some countries will individually take action. We know that Poland is very committed to providing concrete assistance to Ukraine. And I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Poland becoming even more involved in this context on a national basis and the Baltic countries following suit, perhaps including the possibility of troops on the ground."

“I think the Poles would seriously consider stepping in and forming a coalition of the willing if Ukraine gets nothing in Vilnius. Polish feelings should not be underestimated, Poles feel that for too long Western Europe did not listen to their warnings about the real Russian mentality."

He said it would be perfectly legal for Ukraine to request such military assistance.

Rasmussen said it was imperative that Ukraine receive written security guarantees, preferably before the summit, but outside of the NATO framework. These must cover intelligence sharing, joint training of Ukraine, enhanced ammunition production, NATO interoperability and the supply of weapons sufficient to deter Russia from a further attack.
