2012 - U. of NORTH TEXAS SYMPHONIC BAND, "AN AMERICAN ELEGY" by Frank Ticheli (11 mins) (commemorating Columbine)
Recorded in 2012, here's the University of North Texas Symphonic Band with "An American Elegy", written by Frank Ticheli for band in 2000 and arranged for orchestra in 2008.
The piece was written in commemoration of the events at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and in honor of the strength and courage of students and faculty there.
When Ticheli found out the Columbine students did not have an alma mater, he wrote them one: "We Are Columbine". Elements of that song are embedded within "An American Elegy", notably as the music builds to a particularly powerful moment at about the 7-minute mark.
'Tuber Justin Jio commented: "Truly a powerful piece. My teacher was in Kappa Kappa Psi, the fraternity that commissioned Frank Ticheli to compose this. He subbed in for the Columbine's euphonium player at the premiere of this peace when the Columbine band performed it, when their euphonium player couldn't play for the concert. My teacher gave us the honor of playing this piece, and it is amazing how this piece can affect you on such an emotional level. I have never known a piece to move me to tears whilst performing it."
