For the past month, my day-to-day life has been turned upside down. Just imagine in this day-and-age where your checking and savings accounts have been drained of funds and your credit cards have been maxxed out by scammers who obtained your private information via the Dark Web and are able to impersonate you and make unauthorized transactions.

Countless phone calls to credit card issuers and my credit union have been the result of this scam, as well as multiple and lengthy discussions with a fraud specialist. Due to the gravity and dollar amount of the breach, I am currently blocked from being able to make money transfers and payments via my online banking accounts or use any of my debit or credit cards to make purchases - either at stores or online.

I am only allowed to withdraw cash at my credit union branch or ATM. While I've been able to recover about half of the funds that were stolen, I was told that the restrictions may be kept in place for a month while my accounts are being monitored for activity.

I have two pensions that I receive every month, and I've had to write the companies to alert them of my new checking accounts (and not the ones that were compromised) so that I can continue to receive the funds from this point forward.

I have been so bogged down by all of this that I haven't had time to file a police report. That will come in due course.
