I can beat that story. I lived 2 blocks from the Coral Castle for 13 years.
And I worked for a man who owned the property in Florida City where Ed cut the coral stone blocks out of the ground to build the Coral Castle.
I was told that back in the day Ed used a horse drawn wagon/cart to slowly move the blocks from Florida City along the old Dixie Highway (now called US 1) to Leisure City where the Coral Castle is today.
I was shown the holes in the back yard property where the stones were cut out of the ground. There is no dirt in the area so the holes remain today. The area was ruined and turned into a mosquito swamp. My back yard you could only dig down about 4 inches before you hit the solid coral rock.
The whole area of south Florida is coral rock as it was a reef long ago.
The water table in the area is 4 feet. So he only cut down so far to work the dry rock.
Why he moved the rock blocks 6.6 miles to build the Castle I am not sure...but I think they said because he owned the property in Florida City at the time and he built the Castle for his girlfriend he wanted to marry...but she was not impressed.

I moved there in 1980 and the 1st year I had no AC. I used fans only so you have to take 2 showers a day to make it there without AC.

I can understand why she did not want to stay there with him. The sand fleas come right thru a screen window. No AC back then either.

One thing I saw in the Coral Castle that I will never forget and it was a good idea.

Ed had a metal mesh fruit basket hanging from 3 chains above the table. The 3 chains went to one chain attached to the ceiling.

Just above the basket Ed put a small metal funnel with the chain running thru the funnel. He then soldered the end of the funnel to the chain running thru it. Then he filled the funnel up with oil so any bugs (ants or roaches that crawl) can not walk down the chain to get to the fruit without swimming thru the oil.

I think he had another one next to it with a screen cage to keep the bread in and it also had the bug funnel on it. :)

He was a smart guy. And he worked in mines and logging camps out west so he knew how to lift & move huge logs they may weigh more than the rocks he cut and moved in Florida. Coral rock is very porous limestone so it is not so heavy.
