Hi Hobie. We only have the Brita cartridge plastic pour one with the handle. I have always wanted something better. Perhaps we both can garner some good info here! Thank you for posting this. Mike in PA. Btw, this is a good forum for all kinds of gadget recommends too as we have a wide and diverse readership here at RMN!

Hobie,
Epic decanter units filter more stuff than Brita or others, and that includes fluoride. Epic is cost-competitive and has good customer service. USA made too, I think. We're multi-year daily users.
Best wishes,
Rick

Hobie, we have a counter top water filter but when we had the water tested with a meter, we discovered a high count of particles in it. We searched out other types and ended up with a non-counter top filter called ZeroWater. Its a pitcher type you fill up from tap, runs through its filter, pitcher stores in fridge. When we used the testing meter on water after it filtered into pitcher, it truly reads Zero. Best tasting water we've ever had. Meter comes with it and costs, here in Canada, about $45.00 We ordered ours through Amazon, but visit their webpage because it explains just what the filter actually removes. We own two of these now so that we are never without this system. Incidentally, we also tested bottled spring water with the test meter and were surprised to see a high reading of particulates in bottled water.

Consider locating your water filter in your garage instead of your countertop. You can view Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gx2nDtEDXo&t=1s or search YouTube using DIY Water filter two buckets. Using this system means you will have a ceramic water filter, which is the best because it filters the most minute contaminants. Further, it means you will gave 5 gallons of water available, which is important when you consider the speed at which water moves through the ceramic filter.
For keeping water on your countertop, consider getting a water dispenser like Link https://www.amazon.com/CreativeWare-2-5-Gallon-Bark-Beverage-Dispenser/dp/B004W05JQ4/ which takes up a lot less space.

I recommend a Berkey water filter. Have had one for 10 + yrs. Very good gravity filter and very effective.

I use Quality Home Products of Texas, www.qualitytx.com, and have a reverse osmosis spigot next to my kitchen sink. The tank is stored underneath the sink.

Hi Hobie---
H2O.com...I've been using distillation for 3 decades. Its the only method of clean water that removes everything, including radiation.
For a couple hundred bucks its a great deal. The one gallon unit works for our family. Clean boiling pot with vinegar every few days. I've tried all the filter types since the 80's. Went to distillation after much research on clean water. Makes coffee taste real good. The unit lasts about ten years.

I use the countertop dispenser from Zero Water. It's 40-gallon and my research showed it does filter out the fluoride. We're supposed to drink water at room temperature anyway. I use it for my drinking water as well as cooking.

Dear Hobie, Consider a water distiller if it is just for drinking. I have the same one for past 1.5 years and make about 2 gallons per day. If you want to remineralize the water just add a pinch of himalayan salt. I drink it with fresh squeezed lemon juice. Many models to choose from on Amazon. We looked at filters and systems and this was the least expensive option for us.
