It is planned to transfer 180 Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

SPD defense policy spokesman Faber says that Germany can provide Ukraine with up to 180 Leopard tanks. Deliveries of these heavy tanks may begin following the completion of deliveries of Marder armored personnel carriers to Ukraine, while Germany emphasizes that so far we are talking about deliveries of Leopard 1 tanks.

Markus Faber, an SPD defense expert, previously indicated in the Rheinische Post that 180 older Leopard 1s were awaiting export clearance from Berlin so they could be brought to Ukraine. “It’s time to move from a procrastinator to a creator,” he said. "Ukrainians do not have enough time." His party colleague Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chairman of the defense committee, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung: "The European partners are waiting for Germany to be ready to deploy some Leopard battle tanks ." - reports the edition "Tagesschau".

The Leopard 1 tanks are seriously inferior to the Leopard 2 versions in terms of their technical characteristics and combat capabilities. These combat vehicles are at the level of the T-62 and T-64 tanks, and more modern versions (Leopard 1A5 and Leopard 1A6) can be compared in their capabilities with T tanks -72. However, compared to the Leopard 2 tanks, these combat vehicles have a much lower mass.

Experts believe that it is more than likely that if Berlin decides to supply its tanks to Ukraine, then we are talking exclusively about the Leopard 1 version.

Comment: Will this transfer of tanks by Germany be considered a direct violation of the non-militarization treaty of Germany towards Russia after WW2?
Nato nations are dangerously close to making actions that amount to acts of war against Russia, even though this is a proxy war so far. Technically speaking, Russia could launch an attack against Nato nations at anytime as an act of defense.
