Hello Hobie - Thank you for posting this article that attempts to explain what happened here with this unfortunate outcome. The way I see it as having worked in the movies for 25 years, as a prop master as well as all other aspects of the art dept, there are 3 guilty parties.

#1) the armorer or prop master knows darn well bringing any live ammo on set are grounds to be immediately fired. Any real guns would being checked for live ammo several times before film shooting.

#2) The 1st AD (assistant Director) normally would take any firearm from the armorer or prop master and personally check it for live ammo and then pass it along to an actor. Obviously not done in this case.

#3) The actor should be well schooled never to point any real or toy firearm at any living person or animal ever.

A couple years ago I gave toy squirt guns to my grandsons with the warning never to point any toy or real guns at any living being unless intending to kill them.
