Virus: the Wuhan leak … and the Winnipeg one

Incredible and implausible as it may sound, the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, Canada’s leading virus research center, has been conducting experiments and studies of viruses with Chinese military scientists for years.

However, Canada’s security services have long warned against research cooperation with Beijing. China is appropriating foreign discoveries to advance its military programs, including in the viral domain to make diseases more contagious or more deadly.

Despite all this, two scientists working for the Chinese army were able to integrate into the research teams at the Winnipeg lab. One of them was even responsible for a section of the program on special pathogens. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) said it was particularly concerned about reports that it passed information to the Chinese Institute of Virology in Wuhan (WIV).

The Trudeau government is trying to avoid the scandal by claiming that tabling documents on this matter in Parliament could harm national security and ongoing investigations. Members can be informed by following certain security procedures. Notably through the Office for the Supervision of National Security and Intelligence Activities, the independent body that reports to Parliament on matters relating to national security.
