Implosion will be the appearance but it will actually be a conversion in regard to those who are in the know.

Those who don't know, are not prepared, will suffer what appears to be loss, but which is actually subtle and calculated confiscation, in some degree.

The superstitions of the monetary "intelligentsia" of all classes, that gold is a magical store of wealth, will be fanned to frenetic hallucination.

Simultaneously the gods of monetization (mammon) whip the currency markets into an epileptic frenzy until all people loose faith in the religion(s) of currency.

The diagnosis of the fit will be gold fever.

The cure will be regulated use of the aphrodisiac. Registration of the drug with a central maritime bank will be required before it can be injected into the body of the world economy for legal spreadsheet orgasm.

Confiscation will not be necessary if the legal high is overwhelming. Merchants (any who engage in exchange) will gladly cast their gold into the admiralty maritime banking system (sea).

Can't prove any of this, but that's how I would do it.
