SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A federal court has blocked a new rule by the Trump administration that allows health insurance plans that are cheaper than Obamacare.

The decision by the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., said the rule allowing so-called association health plans is “clearly an end run” around the federal Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.”

Under the rule, businesses and individuals can team up to create group health plans that offer less expensive coverage without complying with many of the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

Proponents say the plans are attractive to middle-class Americans who may not qualify for federal Obamacare health insurance subsidies. {{Who pay out overpriced insurance rates to subsidize obummercare}}

New York, 10 other states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit challenging the Association Health Plan rule.

Trump has said association health plans would let Americans “escape some of Obamacare’s most burdensome mandates.” It also allows individuals to pay for the coverage they want or need. When asked, most consumers say they would be happy with just catastrophic insurance coverage for emergency hospital stays or operations, plus physical therapy.
