Trump Demands Work Programs for Welfare

The President has a tough job. Inspire and lead the people, all while trying to find new and genius ways to balance the budget and build the wall. While that might not be an easy task, no one can deny that Trump has done a better job of making change happen than nearly any other president in the last 30 years.

Now, Trump has announced yet another plan to Make America Great Again. (MAGA!) He’s asking the government to enact work requirements for a subsection of healthy, employable Americans receiving welfare benefits.

The Left, of course, is now having a field day with the announcement (who didn’t see that coming). We’ll tell you what we know and why it isn’t what it seems right here.

Key Points

Trump’s plan to rework the welfare system comes from his fiscal 2020 budget plan released just the other day, and it’s just a small part of the changes to come. If implemented, it will institute guidelines that make all Americans 18 to 65 years old work a minimum of 20 hours per week at a job in order to receive benefits.

In work-challenged areas, recipients will also have the option of attending a job training program or a community service program instead. This could include training programs or even free education to help people skill up.

The President’s plan might seem lofty, but it’s far better than throwing money at poverty and hoping for a fix. It gets at the heart of the issue by seeking better support for Americans who struggle to get on their feet. Give a man a fish, and all…

We don’t fully know just yet how this plan might be implemented, but we do know which programs he plans to include. According to the budget, Americans on food stamps, Medicaid, and federal housing support would all qualify if they are able-bodied and have the option to work.

Hardship exemptions will be available for Americans with extenuating circumstances. E.g., someone taking care of a sick child, someone who is disabled or sick themselves, or someone who is unable to access work for some other legitimate reason. It isn’t about causing the truly disenfranchised more harm — it’s about helping people help themselves as best they can.

Democrats are of course incensed. They say Trump is trying to bring back punishments for the poor, that he doesn’t understand poverty. Still others claim he wants to punish the disabled or take away welfare altogether, but that’s simply not true. It isn’t even fake PR spin for the Left; it’s just plain false.

Trump’s plan to enact work requirements for support programs isn’t even new. In fact, Americans on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who are able-bodied have had to work at least 80 hours per month to recieve help for over a decade. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) also requires recipients to try and find work or actively participate in the workforce.

Trump is also seeking nearly $8.6 billion dollars to complete the Mexican border wall. This newer and higher amount accommodates new challenges associated with the wall’s construction. $5 billion will come from Congress; the other $3.6 billion will come from the military construction budget.

The 2020 budget — which tops out at nearly $47 trillion dollars — also includes money for the new Space Force and a brand-new country-wide paid family leave program. But it also makes deep cuts to domestic programs, helping to make it balanced and fair. If implemented, it has the potential to balance the economy by no later than 2034.
