"Advanced Technologies?" by Tiger - 2.28.19
Hello Tiger!
My name's Paul. Last year I written a post about how I don't see trillions of money making everyone in the world rich out of the blue and that this would possibly create many more problems than resolve if people aren't smart about how they use it.
But in that post I also stated that my analysis assumes only a huge influx money with our current technology and society. That's because I think that "new technologies" even WITHOUT money would work a lot better for making everyone wealthy. And after reading your post I think you have very little imagination.
For your better understanding of where I'm coming from I'd like to share some personal story - so I'm a machinist. I always liked making machines and other things and being independent. That's why I currently am making many household furniture by myself, have a vegetable garden and am planning to make a solar panel array and water collection system for my newly bought house.
And how does that relate to the "new technologies"? Well, in my perfect vision of my life I'd like to be 100% independent. That means making my own food, water, electricity and everything I need. Now, of course it's almost impossible with our current technology, but just try and imagine what could you do even today if you had the proper base for everything to provide for yourself. Let's say one of your family members passed away and gave you their house with everything you need. So it would be 1st - solar panels for free electricity. Of course they won't last forever, but let's say you have like 10 times the amount of spare panels to just replace them every 20 years for the next 200 years. 2nd - water collection system. Again with a few spare water tanks and pipes because I think they need to be replaced like every 30 years or so. 3rd - a vegetable garden, fruit trees and maybe even some chickens for fresh eggs. Anyway, more food then your family will ever need. 4th - an electric car charged by your solar panels.
So if you have everything I described, all available with our current technology, would you still need money? Admittedly health care and some hygiene products are the only necessary things you couldn't provide for yourself without money, but we're still quite close to being fully independent with just our current technology. And we need many times less money than most people are currently spending on their lives.
So let's move forward to the day when "new technologies" finally arrive. First, what would these technologies be? From what we hear from time to time the most basic and prevalent ones available in every household would be free energy generators, replicators, med-beds and personal anti-gravity vehicles. Free energy is of course electricity, heating and providing energy for the other stuff. Replicators would supposedly be able to make you a house, food, furniture and even other machines that you'd need. Med-beds would heal most if not all of sicknesses and injuries. And anti-gravity vehicle would replace your car and allow you to go anywhere on the planet in minutes. So if you had just that, with no other "new technologies" that we don't know about yet, would you still need money? For what? You have unlimited energy, house, food, health care and transportation. Anything beyond that would be stupid luxuries like art, maids and butlers.
Now let's get to your arguments:
"They require many more people to be interested in making them work than can be employed because many of these are not the best workers."
To be honest I don't understand what do you mean here. You mean people who are interested in these technologies, but don't work for anyone and just do it as a hobby? Or that there won't be enough workers because there's too few people who can possibly understand these technologies? Either way this is BS because 1st you don't know how hard to understand these technologies are, 2nd you don't know how many engineers would be able to understand them, and 3rd you don't know how many people would be required to operate and maintain these machines. You're just making assumptions here.
"If on this planet we were given technologies developed off-planet, that we did not develop nor understand, we would be slaves to this charity-technology"
So... are you a slave to your toilet if you don't know how the pipe system works? Are you a slave to your fridge, your car, your computer, your smartphone and every technology you're using everyday and have almost to no idea how they work? At least since industrial revolution it's physically impossible for any single person to understand all of our current technology and science. It was possible in renaissance to have "enlightened" people who understood most science and technology in their current world, but right now you won't find a single person on the planet who can tell you how everything works. It's called a "division of labor". For example I'm a machinist and I know exactly how to create machine parts according to blueprints from just a block or a sheet of metal. But do I know how to make this block of metal from iron ore? Hell no. Do I know how to assemble these parts to have a working machine? Somewhat, but not to the extent of being able do it by myself on the first try. And these things are just operations done right before and right after what I'm doing. All in the same field of technology and science. But they might as well be magic to me because I don't need this knowledge to do my job and it's above my paycheck to learn about all the processes and operations from mining the ore to creating a working machine.
"So with what do these persons propose to replace money? -- Force?"
Well, I'm not a guru, but probably the thing I explained in the start - full independence. Everything necessary available to you in your home without any need for other people's work. Of course people can still work and probably will because it's boring to just sit on your ass your whole life and do nothing. I know I'd work even if I didn't need to. At least 2-3 days a week or 2-3 hours a day.
"it will still NOT replace the need for money to motivate those who DO work. What, do you know someone who is glad to work for nothing?"
Dude, that's called CHARITY and it happens all over the world. And the most in rich developed countries where people have enough money to work less and have some free time to help others. Now imagine what I described before. A world where EVERYONE has all of their basic needs met without any work. Of course there'd be tons of work left to do on our planet, but even if only 10% of people would work it still would be more than enough. If all of our basic needs are met, then most of the work in our current world is unnecessary. No office workers, no bureaucrats, no agriculture (except for fun as a hobby), no factory lines, no cars, no hospitals (except for sicknesses and injuries that med-beds couldn't heal, which is probably a tiny portion of today's patients) and no mandatory school education. This would instantly make 90% of people's jobs unnecessary and the remaining 10% of people who'd work only for their passion would be more than enough. Even if you wanted to give them money for their work, what would they use it on? They'll already have a house, food, energy, anti-gravity cars and anything they made for them by replicators. What could they possibly buy with money? Pay someone to be their slave? And who'd want to be someone else's slave for money they don't need to survive?
And the last one...
"How does anyone propose to distribute goods and services without using money?"
No distribution of goods and services because you have everything you need to survive IN YOUR OWN HOME. They need to "distribute" to you your free energy device, your replicators, med-beds and anti-gravity vehicle ONCE and it's done. No one needs to distribute anything to you FOREVER after that. And you don't need to pay people for this one-time delivery. Hell, I'd do this for free gladly! It's just a tiny service at this point. They might even make a contract "You'll get your free energy device, but you have to distribute 100 other ones to other people" See? Work without money. Service for service. Right now such system would be way to complicated to implement, but if there's a lot less work required to survive and everyone has a lot more free time even making service for service contracts would become viable.
Okay... that was longer than I expected. And a lot less silly than people who think that just money can make everyone on the planet wealthy. But still, I hope that someone will find this post informing and if someone wants to have a talk with me aside from post on IDC which I might or might not see anyone can contact me on med2904@gmail.com for any personal discussions.
With regards,
Paul
