My Comment:

All 'third-party' comments about what a 'person-in-question' says or did not say, should be treated, first and foremost as 'hearsay'.

What the person-in-question says personally, is the next best thing 'others' (third parties) can have of the 'relative truth' of the matter.

Only the person-in-question, can really know the 'absolute truth' of the matter - in their heart.

We can only ever make 'assumptions' here, as third-party bystanders.
