It would be funny if it weren’t for the fact that we’re talking about a 1700-year-old institution that long ago appointed itself as the puppetmaster of kings and countries in half the known world.

Now we know why the Vatican has generally always insisted that one Pope be buried before another took its place. When two Popes with opposing views are allowed to co-exist, you just know that sooner or later the whole thing is going to devolve into some rivalrous sideshow.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that the usually reticent former Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Emeritus, just couldn’t take it anymore and he let loose in no uncertain terms. And he did it during the funeral of the suspiciously deceased Joachim Cardinal Meisner [see my previous blog here] at a gilded cathedral in Cologne, Germany. The whole story is something that classical opera composers like Antonio Salieri would have drooled over less than 300 years ago.

Ratzinger is quite elderly and was unable to attend the Cologne funeral in person. However, he wrote his message on paper and had his personal envoy deliver it. The words were a diplomatic, but unambiguous, dissing of Pope Francis. Speaking of his now departed friend, Cardinal Meisner, Ratzinger remarked:

“We know that for him, a passionate pastor, it was difficult to leave the Office, precisely at a time when the Church needs pastors who can resist the dictatorship of the spirit of the time, and know how to live with faith and reason.”

Vatican expert Leo Zagami explained Ratzinger’s meaning [linked here]:

“So Ratzinger talks openly about “dictatorship of the spirit of the time” addressing in a not so mild fashion, the modernization imposed by Bergoglio [Pope Francis], adding this about Meisner, and the state of the Church: “He lived in this last period of his life, with an increasingly deep certainty, that the Lord does not abandon his Church, although sometimes the boat filled up almost to capsize and could turn over.”

Ratzinger was telling the whole world that the Church stands on the brink of destruction and Pope Francis is responsible for its demise. Well, that’s certainly going to make for some awkward dinner conversation back at the Palace, doncha think?

Meanwhile, the internet has also been abuzz with statements to the effect that Putin has ordered Trump to name names, or else he, Vladimir, will do so. In the interest of setting the record straight, I have been unable to verify any such statement even though it was spouted on July 3rd by NeonNettle.com and mirrored in Robert David Steele’s twitter feed.

Nevertheless, what we should be reconsidering are shocking statements that Vladimir Putin made nearly four years ago at a Valdai forum on September 19, 2013. They are shocking because, apparently, it’s against the rules for one world leader to accuse his partners of practicing Satanism. But then again, Vlad has created new “rules.”
