In Response To: The Night Shift: The true cause of our sleeplessness epidemic (Swami)
As one who cares about getting good sleep, whose regimen approaches 7-8 hours per night and who has had to learn to adjust to early morning wake-up for the current job, here are a few observations.
- I have given up ALL forms of caffeine, including decaf which has a small amount of caffeine. In the last couple years, even chocolate. -- I can have white chocolate which has no caffeine. Also, most forms of sugar and other stimulant-type foods.
- With this regimen, I sleep well, falling asleep easily on lying down, and generally waking before the alarm.
- I have stayed well and maintained my highly active work and social yet conservative lifestyle, exceeding the expectations of my advancing years at age 67, most of the time, on this regimen.
- I have observed that friends and folks whom I know who live a "night owl" lifestyle, ALL OF THEM now has a very serious disease including cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other very debilitating illness. Though I have gently urged them to shift their lifestyle to Benjamin Franklin's "Early to bed and early to rise", so far none has tried this approach so far as I am aware.
