Between 200,000 and 250,000 people, according to the media, protested last night in Bucharest and in other fifty Romanian cities against the law on mitigating the corruption. In the capital, hundreds of thousands of people gathered the fourth day in a row on the big Victoriei Square, where are government buildings, the epicenter of the protest movement never seen before in Romania.

The protesters, mostly young, are asking the withdrawal of regulation by the Social Democratic government adopted on Tuesday and could go in the favour of many lawmakers suspected of wrongdoing. Today today, around noon are planning to go in procession by the Parliament, in front of which they will form a human chain.

"The government wants to legalize crime of the office employee which is most devious," protested Sergiu (43), an employee at the bank, who participated in the meeting in Bucharest.

He and his wife Ana-Maria says that they will be coming on the market every night "until the government withdraws the text".

"We will not allow that the government that is acting illegally holds us for the sheep. That's enough!" Said Daniela, 50-year-old pharmacist.

Wake up, Romania

Protesters with strong applause welcomed young people who were carrying a coffin with a wooden cross with the inscription "Romanian Justice".

They sang the national anthem "Wake up Romanian" interrupting the calls for the resignation of the government.

At similar meetings were held in fifty Romanian cities, including Cluj, Sibiu and Timisoara, where participated between 100,000 and 150,000 people, writes media.

The government which came to power a month ago, stresses repeatedly that it intends to "move on" with the reform of the penal code, but the protesters say they will go out on the streets until their demands are met.

The proposed law is to null all corruption charges worth less then 50.000 Euros.
