Here’s What Sci-Fi Can Teach Us About Fascism
Author Bruce Sterling is best known for his futuristic science fiction, but he’s equally comfortable writing about the past. His new novella Pirate Utopia is an alternate history set just after World War I, and takes place in the real-life city of Fiume (now Rijeka), which experienced a brief period as an independent state run by artists and revolutionaries.
“Believe me, what went on in the Fiume enterprise was truly one of the weirdest things that happened in the 20th century,” Sterling says in Episode 238 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. “It’s really, really a strange business.”

The famous science fiction writer fulfilled his promise: The story of Bruce Sterling's new novel takes place in - Rijeka
One of the creators of cyberpunk was for some time been inspired by the history of Rijeka related to Gabriel D'Annunzio, when Rijeka was fertile ground for various kinds of radical ideas - from socialism, anarcho-syndicalism and fascism.
RIJEKA
Just as he promised few years ago, one of the most famous SF writers in the world, Texan Bruce Sterling, placed action of his new novel, "The Pirate Utopia", in Rijeka
Inserted by poster: (in Italian language Fiume, in English The River, on local cars presently is popular bumper sticker "I love the city that flows" because thru the center of our town flows the river that is called The River, and our town is called The River, from Roman times or so.
One of the creators of cyberpunk was already inspired for a long time by period of Rijeka's history from the twenties of the last century, known as the Free State of Rijeka, or perhaps better said period is closely related to Gabriellea D'Annunzio.
That he wanted to write book about it, he announced when he visited Rijeka's Republic Festival. Speaking in a lecture at the festival, Sterling described Rijeka of that time as a world capital of piracy and kind of social laboratory with positive, but also negative outcomes, and this week the US magazine Wired reiterated his fascination with this part of Rijeka's history.
- Believe me, what was happening in Rijeka is truly one of the strangest things that happened in the 20th century, said the famous writer stating that the Rijeka then received a brief period of independence under the rule of the artist and revolutionary, and as such was fruitful ground for various kinds of radical ideas - from socialism, anarcho-syndicalism over to fascism.
His new novel is an alternative historical story set in the period just after the first World War. Judging by the accompanying description of the book on the website of the publishing house, the heroes of the novel are "courageous rebels, utopian warrior pirates of the small Regency of Kvarner in the Adriatic Sea - mortal enemies of the Communists, capitalists and fascists that in turn were not entirely unsympathetic to them."
Small-civil war Regency leads a passionate and a little crazy war veteran and engineering genius Lorenzo SECONDAR, then Frau Piffer - the women trade unionists and torpedo manufacturer of factory run by women - and there is a character named Ace of heart - an aristocrat and spy from Milan - and the Prophet - a seductive warrior who was also a poet.
Although the book is "fresh" reviews that can be found on the Internet are a all of praise and talk about the "fantastic and fun alternative historical story" with "a series of crazy, interesting characters" through which Sterling reviewed alternative social arrangements.
As he is one of the most respected authors SF genre, there is no doubt that this his new novel will have a large number of readers around the world, to which will certainly contribute the introduction to the book, written by a world-famous writer, the Englishman Warren Ellis

TORPEDO OF RIJEKA - FIRST IN THE WORLD
When a group of enthusiasts, “torpedoists”, met at the City Museum of Rijeka in 2007 in favourable circumstances, first torpedoes and their instruments, parts and tools started arriving.
This exhibition our first actual step towards a museum collection and the future museum of the industrial and technical heritage in Rijeka, which was mentioned a few times in the recent years, but only now it has been taken into serious consideration.
Our approach to torpedo research is based on fascination with technical achievements and particular progress in Rijeka at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Because of torpedo, Rijeka became known throughout the world.
Many technical innovations were introduced in the torpedo factory and many new instruments were invented and tested for the first time. No less fascinating is the fact that that early acoustic and aerodynamics research was conducted in this factory and that the breaking of the sound barrier was proven here.
The help for this exhibition came from many assistants of different profiles and interests and cooperative museums and other institutions.
We are very grateful to everyone who diligently and with great enthusiasm volunteered to make this exhibition happen.
