In something more than a month and a half by planet Earth will pass 2016 WF9 object. NASA, however, is not entirely sure what that it is.

The characteristics of this mysterious object were so unusual that even NASA was unable to determine with certainty what it is.

It was named in 2016 WF9, and was noticed on 27 November last year by Neowise NASA system for hunt for comets and asteroids." Scientists have said that it is about one kilometer wide, and is expected to pass closest to Earth on February 25, only "only" 51 million kilometers.

The object itself is somewhat a mystery to NASA scientists, so they could not determine with certainty whether is an asteroid or comet. Asteroids are usually made of stone and other metals, while comets "are covered with more ice." This object looks gloomy, and does not reflect light, which usually means that it is a comet. However, there is a characteristic "tail", ie a cloud of gas and dust that formes behind the comet. NASA scientists could not to determine where it is comes from 2016 WF9.

"2016 WF9 could originate from comets. This facility shows how much can sometimes be blurred distinction between comets and asteroids," says deputy principal investigator at the Laboratory for motor acceleration NASA James Pond.

Neowise discovered another object approaching the earth, but they know what it is. It is the comet C / 2016 U1. It will be visible from northern hemispheres during the first weeks of 2017 in the north-eastern sky just before sunrise. With good binoculars you may be able to view it.
