12:40 - German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière during a press conference in Berlin, said that 18 people "suffered serious injuries" in the attack.

The Minister confirmed that the driver fled the tragedy and that one of the 12 deceased persons found dead in the passenger seat of the truck. This person was killed with a gun that has not yet been found.

Maizière confirmed that the Christmas markets in Berlin will be closed today, but will remain open in the rest of Germany. "It would be wrong to just stop, to change your lifestyle for the enemies of freedom" - he said.

He also confirmed that the suspect in Pakistan and that he was misled in any database that tracks terrorists and their known and potential collaborators. For now, the suspect denies his guilt, he added.
