Frances Farmer's 10 Million Dollar Smile - Life is Full of 'Conditional' People
Video Clip - Frances Farmer with Edward Arnold, Joel McCrea - Commentary
If famous movie stars have million dollar smiles Frances Farmer had a ten million dollar smile! One of the basic assets of actors is, of course, the smile and accompanying facial expression. If it seems that Frances Farmer's smiles change from scene to scene you may be right. It appears that she learned to employ different shapes to her smile and just when you thought you had seen her big smile in a scene you may be astounded to see an even bigger one in another scene.
She had mastered the ability to look very sincere in whatever emotion she was supposed to be displaying, whether truly happy or troubled or sad, etc..
A beginning to her main troubled time in life was possibly when she went off to do Broadway, thus leaving Hollywood for what she probably considered temporarily. It seems the Hollywood bigwigs may not have taken kindly to that move and that is brought out in books about her life.
Also, it appears that she was taken advantage of, financially, on several occasions because she trusted persons close to her. She actually was a sincere person who couldn't seem to find many others who returned her sincerity.
You may ultimately find that life is full of conditional people. By this I mean there are many persons who may accept you if you are of some standard which they approve of. If you meet those standards you may be accepted and if not you may be rejected or even ostracized from society in general because of various power groups who have tremendous influence over the public.
As you go through life the main part of your entire success may constantly hinge on whether you meet certain judgmental requirements of those you come in contact with. A film star's life is often exaggerated, misrepresented, and sometimes even falsified. Stories and rumors don't always hit the front page but can be quietly passed around from circle to circle.
Frances Farmer's ordeals with church people started when she wrote the essay 'God Dies' which seems to be her exposure of what she felt was a Godless society. That trouble seemed to follow after her through life.
This clip from 'Come and Get It' illustrates Barney Glasgow's (Edward Arnold) astonishment and regret at not having returned sooner to visit Lotta's family when he finally meets Lotta's look-alike daughter, also named Lotta (also played by Frances Farmer). He is so amazed he begins attempting to artificially construct another romance of the Lotta look-alike who is much younger.
Do you ever think of old friends you valued and got on with very well, but left them behind in life simply because of geographics? Neither moving on to other places, nor conducting business should cause friends to be separated, but in today's world it often comes down to economics and what and when people can afford to go back and see wonderful old friends. These themes are represented here and can really tug at your heartstrings.
Actor Walter Brennan plays an important role here as Swan Bostrom and adds a 'back home' effect telling Barney how Barney never came back before Lotta passed, etc..
It's an amazing film in which Frances Farmer sang 'Aura Lee', and I don't find it available to put up here, but suggest you see it, complete with the comedic sailing trays bar fight.

Frances Farmer! - Joel McCrea, Edward Arnold, Walter Brennan
: Patriot Frances Farmer & The Real Communists - VIDEO &
: Commentary
: This article was originally posted at: www DOT
: rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?read=273949
: Below is a short clip from the film, 'Frances', which is a
: dramatic film about the life, trials problems, and
: accomplishments of the late Frances Farmer, a very talented
: film actress who may have undergone a lobotomy just before
: or around the time of the House Un-American Activities
: Committee, aka the H.U.A.C., which were the Communist witch
: hunts for so-called 'Reds' among U.S. citizens, etc..
: Timelines are important since the real Frances Farmer had
: allegedly, discovered the names of the top Hollywood
: Communists and may not have accepted their wishes. By some
: accounts, she had been invited to a party at the home of a
: Jewish Hollywood producer. Other account(s) may claim
: Frances was on the way to or from a party for actress
: Deanna Durbin who eventually left the U.S. for good.
: Was Frances Farmer 'Setup' for the Traffic Stop, Jailing, then
: the Asylum?
: There are articles online suggesting that Frances Farmer had
: gone to a party at the movie producer's home and she was
: drugged. She then left the party and was soon
: traffic-stopped, etc., jailed after fighting with the
: officer and subsequently sent to a mental health asylum.
: The immediate committing of Frances to the asylum looks so
: circumspect due to 1. her knowledge of who the top
: Hollywood Communists were, and 2. the then upcoming
: H.U.A.C. hearings where she, undoubtedly, would have been
: required to testify, had she not been committed.
: [Nowadays, of course, struggling with the officer for the
: flashlight would leave the officer very 'in fear for his
: life' in which case he would have just shot Frances, as
: portrayed here by the excellent actress, Jessica Lange.]
: Modern day apologists deny that Frances Farmer was ever
: lobotomized, (1) but those persons could have been paid
: off, and her sister, Edith Farmer, may have been pressured
: by the same power structure that ruined her sister,
: Frances, so I'm back to the point where I don't necessarily
: buy Edith's new book.
: Why wouldn't the criminal psychiatrists who rule the nation
: have covered up such a famous lobotomy and not even made a
: record of it? If Frances stated in her autobiography that
: she was raped by soldiers who were allowed in by orderlies,
: then she might also have been lobotomized during such a
: stay in a madhouse. (2)
: Frances joins the list with Tyrone Power, Alan Ladd, and other
: Hollywood personalities who formed their own film and/or
: stage production companies only to suffer death or
: destruction. Does the word 'competition' come to mind?
: Jessica Lange as Frances Farmer in the film, 'Frances'. Lange
: is accomplished at her craft.
: I might add that if you will notice the eye movements of those
: who are about to 'lose it' and/or those who display
: extremely psychopathic behavior you may see a phenomenon
: where the eye darts about rather rapidly looking back and
: forth as if anticipating something is about to happen.
: Jessica Lange, at times in this film, displays something of
: a timely version of this phenomenon when doing the
: outbursts which she masterfully recreates. Along with
: timing, things like this are the mark of an accomplished
: artist.
: I can't imagine another actress than Jessica Lange, who looked
: a great deal like a young Frances Farmer, who could have
: created such a true-to-life representation of the real
: Frances. When I first saw this film, 'Frances', I was
: jaw-dropped by the ending. Notice - some strong language in
: parts of this film.
