The Deir ez-Zor airport air raid was several airstrikes near the Deir ez-Zor Airport in eastern Syria on 17 September 2016.[2]

The Coalition raid

The bombs hit Syrian Army positions on the Tharda Mountain and at a nearby artillery base.[3] Russia and Syria reported that the attack was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition, without naming the countries involved, and that it killed 62 Syrian government soldiers[2] and wounded 100. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death toll to be 90, with 110 wounded.[1] The attack triggered a diplomatic crisis, and both U.S. and Russian ambassadors chastised each other at a United Nations Security Council meeting called in response of the incident.[4][2]

The Russian Defence Ministry said the attack was conducted by four jets, including 2 F-16 and 2 A-10 close air support and ground attack aircraft.[5]
