I had a scary experience with a bag of Quaker rice cakes.

Normally, I buy plain rice cakes. The ingredients are rice, water, and sometimes, salt. When I eat them plain (without toppings), my limit is about two. Then I am satisfied.

One day, the store didn’t have any plain rice cakes, so I bought a bag of “white cheddar” rice cakes, just to try. When I got home, I sat down in front of the TV and ate one. It was good (really good!). Then, I ate another. And another. Before long, I couldn’t shove them into my face fast enough. I ate the whole package. And I’m surprised I didn’t eat the bag they came in.

When I finished, I was stunned. I didn’t know what happened to me.

Here are the ingredients. I’d love to know which one caused me to go out of control:

WHOLE GRAIN BROWN RICE, CORN (WITH GERM REMOVED), NONFAT MILK, BUTTERMILK, SALT, CHEDDAR CHEESE (MILK, SALT, ENZYMES), BUTTER (CREAM, SALT), WHEY, SUNFLOWER OIL WITH NATURAL TOCOPHEROLS ADDED TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS OR CANOLA OIL, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, BUTTERMILK FAT, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS (CONTAINS EGG AND SOY INGREDIENTS), MALTODEXTRIN, YEAST EXTRACT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, CITRIC ACID, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, LACTIC ACID, ONION POWDER.

I felt like an addict looking for a fix. Maybe this is what they meant in that old potato chip ad that said “You can’t eat just one!”
