The investigation of the international jihadist chain that stands behind the terrorist attacks in Belgium and France is also considering British links with al-Qaida's plans that pawed the way to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, reports The Independent.
Five people, four men and a woman, were arrested last week in Birmingham for links to terrorist attacks in Belgium and France. This followed after reports that two terrorists involved in the massacres were last year in England, where they photographed the places they visited.
Security officials are also investigating ties between Islamists in the UK and those in Belgium and France, that range up to 15 years to the past. This includes connections to Molenbeek, a suburb of Brussels, which is designated as the main terrorist garden in Europe.
The intelligence officers believe that the links between the UK and other extremists in Europe, were established 15 years ago and that they were especially activated after the civil war started in Syria in 2011.
The murder of a famous Afghan commander
After the attack in Brussels last month was arrested Abderlamane Ameroud. He was shot at the tram station after he refused to hand over the backpack which was suspected to contain explosives. Ameroud was later detained on suspicion that he was part of the attack, which was at an advanced stage, and whose target was the French town of Argenteuil.
Ameroud was already in prison and that after he was convicted in 2005 for his involvement in the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the famous Afghan commander and commander of the army. He was killed on 9 September 2001, and his death was ordered by Osama bin Laden. It is believed that this was part of a plan to carry out attacks on New York and Washington.
Suicide attack on Masuda was performed by Belgian nationals of North African origins. They gained access to Masuda pretending to be journalists and document were issued to them by Islamic organization led by Yassir al-Sirri, an Egyptian resident in the UK.
Al-Sirri was arrested and charged for alleged involvement in the assassination of Massoud, but the complaint was dismissed after a judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence for a conviction. Al-Sirri had fled from Egypt in 1993 with the help of fake Yemeni passport. There he was convicted to a death sentence for the attempted assassination of the Egyptian prime minister. He also got 15 years in prison in 1999 because he was allegedly a member of a terrorist organization.
Links in the UK
Tarek Maaroufi, who was also convicted of involvement in the murder of Massoud and served six years in prison, was a frequent visitor to London and became a follower of radical cleric Abu Qatada, it turned out later.
Egyptian al-Sirri has never been granted asylum, but he was allowed to remain in the country. He could not be deported to Egypt because there he would face the risk of abuse.
He complained because he was refused asylum, the Supreme Court rejected asylum request because of his contributions to books related to al-Qaeda and his alleged involvement in the killings in Afghanistan.
Also, the Ministry of the Interior in 2008 checked the conditions of bail of radical cleric Abu Qatada when they saw him on the street with al-Sirrijem. Under the conditions of bail he was not allowed to socialize with extremists. Also he was not allowed to talk on a cell phone, and al-Sirri was at all times during their meeting talking on a cell phone. It is believed that Abu Qatada then gave him instructions of what to speak.
Recently, the United Kingdom recorded a few terrorists who were in her area. Thus, in addition to the five people arrested in Birmingham, Great Britain visited "the man with the hat" Mohamed Abrini who was recorded at the airport in Brussels.
Visit the UK
Birmingham visited Salah Abdeslam also, the only surviving attacker of Paris, and in the UK was also Abdelhamid Abaaoud who led attacks on police in Paris.
Western intelligence officials reviewed the previous relationship between the jihadists in France and Belgium and Great Britain. This includes the role of Djamel Beghala, who was a mentor to Chérif Kouachiju, one of the attackers in the newsroom of the Parisian magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Beghal was praying at a mosque in London's Finsbury Park, and become the follower of Abu Qatada, and a cleric Abu Hamza.
Beghala is seen by intelligence as the main recruiter for al-Qaeda in Europe.
