Leaked files from the Panama Papers showed how Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð and his wife secretly owned an offshore firm that held millions of dollars in Icelandic bank bonds during that country’s financial crisis.[1] When confronted with this in a television interview with Swedish investigative show Uppdrag Granskning on 3 April 2016 Sigmundur Davíð walked out, saying he knew nothing about it.[16][1]

Former Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir said that Sigmundur Davíð should resign.[17]

Sigmundur Davíð later said he would not resign. He apologized for his behavior during the interview, saying that he should not have left in the middle of the interview.[13]

Over the growing pressure of the Panama Papers release and calls for a snap election from the althing, Sigmundur Davíð asked President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to dissolve parliament. The last chance effort was swiftly refused, the president cited that "[he] was not ready to agree to that request (for dissolving parliament) until [he] had discussions with the leaders of other parties on their stand". He resigned from his position as PM on 5 April 2016.[18][19][20][21] Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson became the interim Prime Minister the same day.
