The Pentagon has drafted plans for the positioning of US troops, tanks and other armored vehicles indefinitely along the eastern border of NATO, to limit Russian aggression, writes WSJ. This could be the first such deployment since the end of the Cold War.
Such a plan the Pentagon announced last year, when they said they want to increase the US military presence in Eastern Europe. Some countries are members of NATO have expressed concern the US commitment to protect them - especially in light of the intervention of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.
250 tanks, 1,700 vehicles ...
US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, said that the new plan could alleviate such concerns because it will position the best and most modern US weapons in this part of Europe.
New equipment includes 250 tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and Paladin cannons, and more than 1,700 additional vehicles and trucks. In combination with the equipment that is already in Europe, this would seem značjano weapons "in case something happens," said Work for the WSJ.
The White House has approved a plan
The White House approved the broad outline of the plan when it approved 3.4 billion dollars for the "European Reassurance Initiative" last month, leaving the details of the plan, which should begin in February 2017, the elaboration of the Pentagon. However, Congress has yet to approve the request.
SAD is initially rotated about 4,200 troops in and to Europe in 2016 with a total of about 62,000 US vojinka in Europe. Now the Pentagon aims to rotate the armored brigade each year, and 4,200 soldiers divided between the six countries - Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.
As new equipment, rotating troops will be concentrated in the east, and will move if necessary, among other NATO members for exercises and other training.
The basic act NATO - Russia
General Ben Hodges, commander of US Army Europe, said that this plan will create a constant presence along the eastern border of NATO. He said to the American forces in each country performed exercises with the army and the country. "American equipment and personnel will be in each of these countries," says Hodges.
Russian official on Tuesday said that Moscow is closely monitoring the US plan and the decision to have a permanent troops in Eastern Europe. Russia's official position remains that the US and its allies are using false excuses piled up to the army on the Russian border.
Russian officials say the decision violates the fundamental laws of the NATO - Russia in 1997, according to which alliance will position itself significant, constant combat forces on Russia's borders. While "significant" is not defined, NATO officials say that the number of troops is in accordance with the said Act.
Russians are concerned
In an interview with WSJ Russian ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko, last week condemned the plan. "Russia does not spread," he said. "NATO is expanding its territory, as a result of enlargement, closer to Russia. And now uses this area to streamline the military power of Russia. "
Under this plan, the older equipment will be repositioned into warehouses in Germany for renovation, and will then go to bases around Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. As a result, officials in Poland and the Baltic countries are concerned that only a small amount of equipment to get to the eastern allies.
Old and new Europe
"It just reinforces the two-tier alliance, old Europe and new Europe," said one diplomat from Eastern Europe. "Forces are going back to the old Europe and there is nothing new for the new Europe, and we are the ones who are most exposed."
US officials say that under this new plan, some countries may have more or less equipment at a certain point, because the US will constantly rotate forces in Europe. However, military officials point out, Europe will eventually have one brigade more modern US military equipment.
