The Indian version of the T-50 PAK-FA, will be armed with the fastest cruise missile in the world, the BrahMos. This new specific request for the future fifth generation fighter is under development. To meet this request, the inner hold of the T-50 is to be altered to accommodate the missile. Also the design of the latter, finally, may be revised to suit the new fifth generation platform. If the current problems of the development are resolved, and implementation of the supersonic missile become successful, New Delhi could have a single system of its kind in the region. The Indian Air Force could then deploy fifth-generation platforms that can penetrate the hostile airspace and hit with missiles traveling at Mach 3, a series of sensitive targets.
The india, thanks to the terminal phase of the BrahMos considered particularly difficult to intercept, could hit Chinese and Pakistani targets with relative impunity. In fact we know that Moscow and Delhi are already working on hypersonic BrahMos-II model. The combination of a low platform observability and hypersonic missile is considered a nightmare for a traditional defense system.
Moscow has long been engaged in the development of a special fuel that would enable hypersonic aircraft to fly at five times the speed of sound. The missiles at Mach 5 (6,125 km / h) are classified as "hypersonic". Evade detection by the air defense system of the enemy, severely diminishing its ability to intercept the missile. It 'so easy to imagine how the hypersonic weapons are the future and could dramatically shift the balance of military power in the world.
The main difficulty in the development of the missiles, which will fly faster sound, is to design new materials able to withstand the very high temperatures caused by the hypersonic regime. We speak, in fact, missile with a top speed of six / eight (or even ten / twelve) with Mach RamJet technology. The BrahMos should arm the Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft, fighter of Indo-Russian fifth generation that gave birth to the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA.
The joint effort to research and develop the new fifth-generation system, was revised to eight billion dollars, budget evenly divided between the two countries, compared to the twelve initial. The new agreement provides for the construction of eleven aircraft: eight PAK-FA version for Russian and three FGFA for the Indians with the first prototype delivery by 2019. The contract also includes upgrading 50 specifications, prior acquisition cancellation Indian Aeronautics of the new system, estimated at 250 aircraft.
That the PAK-FA is going through a particularly difficult period, it is now common knowledge. In six years, the six prototypes of the T-50 have only completed 700 test flights. The last known incident of a T-50 dates from June 10, 2014, when one of the fifth prototype caught fire engines. By Sukhoi had to suspend production of the sixth prototype and use the components already designed to repair damaged aircraft. The Indians themselves, continue to complain of serious technical deficiencies.
To date it is unclear whether Russia has the financial means to continue to support the development of the PAK-FA. Despite the proclamations and announced a production of the series in 2017, also the Russian Air Force has reduced the order of sixty T-50 to a dozen platforms with changes implemented. Western analysts agree that when the development of the PAK-FA will be completed, Moscow will have a formidable fighter. The design is probably sophisticated enough if not similar in performance to the F-22 Raptor. Whether it can be even higher this is open to question. The Russians paid the inexperience with the fifth-generation technology, such as the integration between the different sensors and approach with the new stealth coating of which the Pak-Fa comes. It could take years and billions of dollars.
