Your Home Security System May Be Utterly Useless Against Hackers

Do you have wireless home security? Probably not a good idea unless you back it up with a landline or internet connection.
SimpliSafe has aimed itself as the budget home security solution. But security researcher Andrew Zonenberg at IOActive has an analysis on the SimpliSafe, and put simply, it's not very secure at all.
You can read Zonenberg's report here. SimpliSafe's goal was to create a home base security system connected to a series of wireless sensors to create a cheap security system that didn't require professional installation. But Zonenberg's report finds that the wireless signals sent by the system are poorly encrypted.
Zonenberg, from there, didn't have to do much to hack into the security system. Using some off-the-shelf gear, he was able to intercept the pin number from the SimpliSafe control. A home hacker could use a SimpliSafe system and a microcontroller to spoof other devices in the home into thinking the pin's been sent, thus shutting down the system.
So how can you prevent this? Basically, get rid of SimpliSafe.
"Unfortunately, there is no easy workaround for the issue since the keypad happily sends unencrypted PINs out to anyone listening," Zonenberg writes. "Normally, the vendor would fix the vulnerability in a new firmware version by adding cryptography to the protocol. However, this is not an option for the affected SimpliSafe products because the microcontrollers in currently shipped hardware are one-time programmable. "
SimpliSafe told ArsTechnica that they don't expect these attacks will be common. "While any wireless system is susceptible to this type of attack from a sufficiently savvy and motivated intruder, our systems can be backed up with with a land line or an internet connection for no additional cost," SimpliSafe wrote author Dan Goodin. "Also, this type of attack represents such a small percentage of total break-ins that the FBI does not even keep a count. "
